This session will clarify what defines a Course‑Based Undergraduate Research Experience (CURE) and distinguish it from traditional laboratory courses. Dr. Ana Vallor draws on her experiences as an active instructor in two national microbiology‑based CUREs to highlight how scientific teaching principles—such as active learning, inclusive course design, and evidence‑based assessment—are essential to the successful development and implementation of CUREs for both instructors and students.

Using national data and programmatic evidence, the session will examine how well‑designed CUREs improve student engagement, persistence, and retention, with benefits for students from historically underrepresented groups in STEM. Attendees will leave with a shared understanding of what constitutes a CURE how scientific teaching principles distinguish CUREs from “lab‑as‑usual,” and why this pedagogical approach is a powerful tool for equity and student success.
